Abstract:
The article deals with the issues related to the post-war onomastic problems on the so-called "Recovered Lands". This issue is important because it depicts the essence of social, political and administrative changes that occurred after World War II in these lands. The main aim was to show the complexity of the problems stemming from re-introducing local names. It was also important to depict the significance of the Polish identity of those names for the newly resettled population. ; The secondary aim of the article was to show the complicated past of the discussed lands by presenting the complexity of the onomastic issues. The basic question discussed in the paper was what happened that the local names needed to be changed in the first place, as well as who changed them and in what way. The article was divided into three parts: The onomastic situation in the Western Recovered Lands after WWII, The beginnings of the official post-war name-changing processes and the Activity of the Commission for the Determination of Place Names. ; It discusses the onomastic issues in period directly following the war, when most of the name changes occurred (up until the year 1950). In means of territorial restrictions, it deals with the region of the so-called Recovered Lands with the emphasis on the Western Lands (which include the territory of the contemporary Słubice County, among others).
