Abstract:

Cecylia Niewiadomska was one of the leading educationists of the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries. She was born in 1855 in Warsaw. After having finished her secondary education and qualifying as a teacher she begen to work as a teacher of Polish Language and Literature in secret educational groups and private schools for girls. She was an active member in many social organizations in the territories of the Kingdom of Poland, the objective of which was the education of Polish children threatened with the loss of their national identity resulting from the activities of the foreign power, dominating that part of Poland. (The National League, The Polish and Lithuanian Women's Circle, The Society for Secret Teaching, The Society for National Education, The Polish School Mother Organization and others). ; In the times of foreign domination and in the Re-Established Poland she wrote and compiled many editions of school readers and anthologies, handbooks for teaching Polish Literature, a grammar with spelling exercises. She translated books for children and youth from foreign literatures (Dickens, Swift, Andersen, Corelli, Demolder, Lagerlof, Golo, Molnar), she compiled a collection of popular talks on history and she published many short stories and novels of her own for young readers, making them the vehicles of her educational ideas. ; As an expert in the field of literature for children and young people she was for many years a consultant of the Gebethner and Wolff publishers in Warsaw. She was also a member of the editorial board of amonumental publication, "The Nineteenth Century: A HundredYears of Polish Thought". She died in 1925 in Warsaw and she was buried at the PowązkiCementery.
