Abstract:
The author is interested in the importance of gender in respect of the value of social capital of women and men. In this article the social capital of women and men has been compared on the basis of results of research representative of both Polish society and the Łodź area. Various ways of defining femininity and masculinity, as well as different social roles of women and men, and unequal gender status have been taken into account. ; The article also discusses the problem of the consequences of differences in the social capital of women and men for the functioning of individuals of both genders. The results of the survey show that women and men invest in different types of social capital. Men possess better bridge equity, which gives them access to more differentiated resources which have instrumental value, while women, first of all, create bonding social capital, which gives them expressive benefits. ; Different reserves of social capital affect the life chances of individuals. Men, thanks to bridging networks, have access to knowledge and a better position on the job market, while women can count on family support in the case of personal or financial problems. These differences in the social capital of the individuals of both sexes can be treated, on the one hand, as yet another example of gender inequity and, on the other hand, as one of the determinants of unequal status of women and men in different areas of social life.
