Abstract:
The focal issue of this paper is one of the ways of forming new language units - the notion of appellativization of proper names that occur in contemporary Polish language as well as in school and university students` slang. The considerations are devoted to eponyms, that is words which have undergone the process of appellativization, derived from the thematic area of literature, especially from names of literary characters. ; Among the gathered eponyms, several ones are parts of set phrases. A manner in which this process is performed has been presented by some examples selected from dictionaries, encyclopaedias, articles etc. The analysis of the accumulated material shows that the transfer of nomina propria into the class of common nouns extends the scope of informal vocabulary, chiefly connected to human features. ; It has been observed that the trend of creating eponyms of literary origins also appears among the young users of language. When a character becomes famous (sometimes misunderstood), then their name will become a basis for another eponym used in students` slang. Very often, young people refer to metaphor and metonymy which allow semantic shifts. It frequently involves expressive marking of new concepts and using irony or negative evaluation.
