Abstract:
Present research indicates that the governorship of the Duchy of Glogów originated in the 13th or at the beginning of thr 14th century. However the analysis of the sources proved itto be wrong. The governorship arose in the duchy only after the local ducal dynasty becameextinct at 1476. However, the position was continuously assigned since 1488 when the dukeJohn II was expelled out of his land and the new rulers mostly did not reside in the duchy. ; That's why the need for governorship appeared as late as 1488. Moreover, the unstableness of the institution's name is a remarkable evidence of the fact that the governorship in the Duchy of Glogów originated later than previously thought. The first title "landfogt" was very soon substituted by the name "hauptmann" which was more common in Silesia. ; But this term was used in many variations and semantic nuances too. These differences based not only on the self-confidence of the authority's holders, but on the rulers and on the attitude of the political estates (nobility, clergy and burghers) too. The evolution led to a division of the governorship in two sections. The absent governor (hauptmann) was usually represented by a deputy (statthalter) in the duchy. The institution's stabilization became reality as late as in the first two decades of the 16th century.
