; Ten niedługi "wstęp", otwarty tytułem nadrzędnym ("Adversaria abo terminata" [...]) i podtytułami ("Protrepticon", "Syncretismus", następnie: "Terminata rzeczy wojennych z Turkiem"), pozwala uchwycić subtelny niuans panującej w ówczesnym społeczeństwie atmosfery, naznaczonej, mówiąc najkrócej, trwogą.

Abstract:

This paper is an attempt of both presenting and re-issue (with commentaries) XVII century Polishwritten relic (edited especially in prose). It is just a short preface - rather unknown - introductingto "Diary" by Prokop Zbigniewski. The "prelude" announces the report (day by day) of the battle atKhotin (Chocim) prepared by the eyewitness and participant of warfare near the Dniester Riverbetween Poland and Ottoman empire in 1621. The motifs and thoughts contained in the "prologue"reveal an author ? educated, well-read and waiting for the newest and actual information. ; And that is why, as it seems, he was not Zbigniewski, but someone else who was really looking forward good tidings. The latter`s approach to the matter covers quite a lot of surprising sources and proves acquisition of contents from outputs (in various ways - as citations or allusions) of i.a. Homer ("Iliad"), Pliny the Elder ("Naturalis Historiae"), Bede ("History"), Klemens Janicki (elegies and "Vitae regum Polonorum"), Baptista Mantuanus ("Obiurgatio cum exhortatione" [?]), Piotr Skarga ("Sejm Sermons"), the abovementioned Zbigniewski`s account, and of course Bible (especially "Genesis") or probably other texts printed in the year of Khotin (often inspirated by earlier writers), too. ; Moreover, this modest entry allows to decypher the provenience of a literary concept laterintroduced by Marcin Paszkowski in his "Sauromatian Flague" ("Chorągiew sauromatcka" [?])connected with gifts apparently handed to Turks by Poles (before fights, during the negotiations). This idea did not become from any historian or chronicler. But it certainly arouse because ofpopularity of a falsificated letter of sultan sent - as it was believed - to the land ruled right then bySigismund and later Vladislaus Vasas... (its occurrences are estimated in the years 1618-1646). ; The nameless author showed some previous prophecies (forecasting all together Polish victoryand the fall of Ottomans` country) as finally fulfilled. Consequently it was also a miraculous sign ofPoles` specificity and uniqueness, furthermore, it additionally illustrated an advantage of truth overany predictions, however predictions already achieved and because of that absolutely ennobling thewinners. And that was the main purpouse and message of the discussed opening also confirmedwith the announcement (in the "prologue") of the Zbigniewski`s reliable (at last) words. And thelast sentence: there are many evidences for a presumption that it was Paszkowski who might havewritten the introduction in question.
