Abstract:

During the period of 1526-1740, Świdnica's administrative territary (in its modern sense) comprised gentry estate that was part of the duchies of present-day Głogów and Krosno. It was not a homogenous area since the duchies belonged to different dynasties and, consequently, were under different fealties, the Czech Kingdom (Silesia) and Brandenburg, which was reflected in their administrative division: Drzonów, Lipno, Grabowiec, Koźla and Piaski were a group of estates that had been separared from the duchy of Głogów and given to Brandenburg margraves in 1482 and so became part of the duchy of Krosno, while Radomia, Słone, Buchałów, Letnica, Dobra (non-existent now), Świdnica and Wilkanowo belonged to the duchy of Głogów - being part of Silesia - and so they remained an integraf part of Grünberg (Zielona Góra) weichbild. ; The estates on the Silesian side swore fealty to the Austrain eroperor from the Habsburg dynasty, whereas Krosno estates were obliged to swear fealty to Brandenburg margrave, and since 1701 - to the King of Prussia. Despite this division the estates co-operated freely with each other. With time, some of them turned into centres of gentry economy, e.g. Świdnica, run by the families von Kittlitz and von Kesslitz, or Letnica, run by the families Knobelsdorff, Kesslitz, Schenckendorf, Stentsch and Diebitsch. Both estates were connected through their owners and i t was during the governance of those dynasties that they achievedthe highest level of their economic development, typical of the period of XVI-early XVIII c. Most of the villages located on the above described territory were part of other, bigger gentry estates, often quite distant ones.
