PB - Zielona Góra: Oficyna Wydawnicza Uniwersytetu Zielonogórskiego N2 - In this article Anna Szostak suggests that the novel by the Polish writer of the interwar period can benow interpreted as a contribution to the reflection on the last century, and especially on changes inthinking about reality and European consciousness, which were triggered by the events of the years1914-1918. N2 - Therefore, the novel can be included in the literature of civil unrest, which was the reaction to the First World War full of doubts in the moral ideological foundations of Europe (represented by outstanding works by Erich Maria Remarque, Louis-Ferdinand Celine, Anna Seghers, Arnold Zweig and Jaroslaw Hašek), but it can also be perceived as a text that discusses a significant issue of the birth of the modern vision of the world - the moment when one clearly realized the failure of the Enlightenment illusions of the saving power of technology and civilization progress serving humanity, but also, and perhaps first of all - when the faith in the overall order and transcendent ontological right of the human existence was undermined. N2 - "The Yellow Cross" is a pacifist and historiosophic novel asking about a sense of history and a placeof an individual in it - an individual who is forced to revise their political socio-economic intellectualpsychological and metaphysical beliefs and redefine some concepts such as humanity and humanitarianism, as well as the overriding sanction of existence, its purpose and meaning.
