PB - Zielona Góra: Oficyna Wydawnicza Uniwersytetu Zielonogórskiego N2 - Zygmunt Krasiński suggested in his philosophical and political writings from 1841-1858 that thehistory of the Slavs, as well as the whole mankind, is ruled by the law of the battle between two opposing moral elements: good and evil. Such an interpretation of history had far-reaching ideologicalimpact on the poet`s works. It contributed to the concept of Russia and Poland as two group spiritsthat are hostile towards each other: dark and bright, demonic and angelic. In this way, the poet translated the idea of battle between opposing ethical values, which is characteristic for some religious beliefs, directly into historical reality. N2 - While writing the treatise "About the Position of Poland from the Divine and Human Vantage Point" he was interested in ancient Iranian Zoroastrianism, which in the 19th century was considered to be a variant of gnosis. He assigned the roles of two Manichaean deities (stemming from this religion) to Russia and Poland: Aryman (Angra Mainju - "destructive spirit") and Ormuzd (Ahura Mazda - "wise spirit"), respectively. N2 - The Russian and Polish nations, however, were not supposed to represent themselves, but larger cultural formations with which they were merged by history. The former was associated with schismatic, depraved and barbarian Byzantium, whereas the latter - with the faithful, catholic and civilized Latin world.
