PB - Zielona Góra: Oficyna Wydawnicza Uniwersytetu Zielonogórskiego N2 - Polish-Russian relations for centuries were marked by conflict. Polish political transformation in 1989 meant that our country had entered a new stage of building our independence from our big neighbor. Problems in these relations were due to historical reasons, disputes regarding energy and Polish support for the democratic transition in post-Soviet republics. In 2005 the right-wing Law and Justice party (PiS), whose leaders were determined to run tough policy towards the Russian Federation, won the parliamentary election. N2 - They had to face the problem of the Nord Stream pipeline, the construction which was unfavorable for Poland, and was initiated by Russia in cooperation with Germany. The problem in Polish-Russian relations was also caused by the idea of deployment elements of the US missile defense shield on Polish territory and thus strengthening the alliance with the United States, which Russia did not like. Tensions were also caused by Polish support for countries such as Ukraine and Georgia in their efforts to join the European Union and NATO.
