 abstract={The aim of the article is to define the identity of the university and confront it with the everyday practices of this institution and the academic community. The foundations for the university`s mission - understood as the pursuit of truth - are autonomy and collegiality.},
 abstract={The author analyses the contemporary condition of universities in three areas of conflict: (1) the collective pursuit of truth versus the competition among individual scholars imposed by market logic (metrics, accountability based on individual rather than collective achievements), resulting in the weakening of the academic community; (2) collegiality versus managerialism (the authority of the rector, emphasis on efficiency and effectiveness), also driven by market logic, leading to the marginalization of collegial governance; and (3) autonomy versus the intrusion of other logics of power (fields of power) into the university, resulting in the heteronomization of universities. The author presents positive examples of academic practices and proposes solutions that could strengthen the academic character of university communities.},
