 abstract={The article deals with the issues referring to the design of the library buildings and the new organisation of the library space. It presents the changes of the perspective on architecture and library building construction, as well as space planning inreference to technological progress and the new media, socio-cultural experienceand the role of knowledge in the social system of values. The paper presents the role of the architectural groups LIBER and IFIA in promoting the modern conceptsand trends in library building. It discusses the desirable qualities that became widely known as the "ten commandments" of planning libraries formulated by Harry Faulkner-Brown and the features of planning new library space according to Andrew McDonald. The text presents the modern library as a conceptually coherent multi-functional space and crucial in design reference to public space, social focalpoint, academic and cultural environment, information center, education and self-development premise.},
