 abstract={Changes in culture and technology are an inspiration to dialogue about problems of modern libraries, i.e. their condition, their place among other cultural institutions,their goals and functions which they must fulfill to meet the needs of various social groups. A new model of a public library is being developed, which joins tradition and modernity. A library shares printed copies of books and magazines as well asenables access to the digital resources and services. Public libraries in Poland havea big potential, but they have different status in the environment, range of tasks,and all of them are influenced by local government and state policy. These factors determine the possibilities of development of public libraries, associating in the changes and adjusting them to the contemporary requirements and standards. The place of the modern public library can be determined by analysing the indicators of the selected branches of their activity in the past ten years.},
