The family is the most appropriate place for the life and rehabilitation of a child or adult with an intellectual disability. It creates optimal conditions for development when it properly fulfills its functions towards the child. As a result, it allows young people to meet their material needs and prepare them for social life. In the case of children with a deeper intellectual disability, it will provide them with skills, habits, abilities and knowledge enabling to gain the basics of independent functioning in society, i.e. the formation of life independence.}, abstract={In this study, the author adopts the definition of the family following T. Żółkowska (Żółkowska 1994: 14), who considers the totality of relatively stable economic, cultural and social conditions to be the basic factors of the family environment. According to the author, they are an important factor in the comprehensive development of a child. The economic, cultural, and socio-educational conditions created by the family environment largely determine the development of adaptive skills of an individual with a more severe intellectual disability.
