Samples of the non-frozen soil and the soil frozen were tested using scanning electron microscope SEM. The analysis of the photographs was conducted using Photo Shop CS4 software. N2 - Results obtained show that the microstructure of the frozen soil undergoes significant modifications. The analysis revealed increase in total area of pores. On the basis of statistical analysis it can be assumed that the specific surface area of bentonite depended on the type of exchangeable cation (Ca^2+, Mg^2+, K^+, Na^+).
